Tolworth Girls’ School and Sixth Form is part of the Kingston School Direct Alliance working in partnership with other secondary schools and primary schools located within the Royal Borough of Kingston-Upon-Thames. We also work collaboratively with Higher Education Institutions and Educational organisations in the training and development of learning and teaching.

School Experience Programme:

The School Experience Programme (SEP) is open to anyone who is thinking of a career in teaching. It is run by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) and allows people a chance to spend time in a classroom, observe lessons and see for the reality of being a teacher. It is also provides a valuable experience and evidence to draw on in your application for a teacher training place.

School Direct:

School Direct is a school-led teacher training route which enables Graduates to select the schools where they train.  The Kingston School Direct Alliance (KSDA), led by Coombe Girls’ School, recruit and select their own trainees with the expectation that they will then go on to work within the school where they trained. Tolworth Girls’ School and Sixth Form provide placements for School Direct trainee teachers through the Kingston School Direct Alliance.

Development & Training for Teachers

Investing in the development and training of all staff at all levels is essential in any school’s drive to self-improvement. Through their commitment to training and development the staff at Tolworth Girls’ School and Sixth Form role model life-long learning to their students.


As part of this commitment one of our key whole-school priorities is to develop a coaching ethos which promotes the development of reflective practioners.  Several of our staff have been trained as coaches on the ‘Coaching with Emotional Intelligence’ programme. Staff at Tolworth Girls’ School and Sixth Form are encouraged to work with a coach and to apply coaching techniques in their development at all levels.


Outstanding Teacher Programme and Improving Teacher Programme (OLEVI)

We are a Facilitation school for the OLEVI Outstanding Teacher Programme and Improving Teacher Programme. These programmes enable teachers to drive forward improvements within their own practice and embed a culture of continual whole school improvement through a coaching ethos. We are offering places for this programmes to other schools.

National Professional Qualification in Middle Leadership (NPQML)

Tolworth Girls’ School is committed to developing leadership at all levels, in particular investing in staff who aspire to senior leadership positions later in their career.  Therefore, we work with the Institute of Education through the Kingston Teaching School Alliance delivering a nationally accredited programme for middle leaders, the National Professional Qualification in Middle Leadership (NPQML).  This is a Level 1 qualification aimed at those who are currently leading a team within an organisation.

Programme Details

NPQML will help you develop the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to lead a high-performing team in a school and to improve classroom practice.

Who can apply?

You should be a middle leader in a school, or about to take on a substantive middle leader role. It is expected that applicants have or will have responsibility for leading a team within the school. It is aimed at key stage leaders, curriculum area leaders, pastoral services leaders, subject leaders or heads of department.

What’s involved?

You’ll need to complete 2 essential modules, 1 further module of your choice, 1 in-school project and a final assessment. Each module requires up to 50 hours of learning, including around 20 hours of practical learning in your school, around 10 hours face-to-face peer and facilitated learning, plus around 20 hours reading and reflection with online learning.


Completion of NPQML can take from 6-18 months, with around 12 months being the average. This is a self-managed programme and you decide how best to structure the elements to meet the deadline for assessment, although we will provide a suggested timetable.

Mentoring of  Newly Qualified Teachers

All Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) receive a subject specialist mentor who meets with them weekly to support and mentor them through their first year as a teacher. Alongside this, the NQTs follow a programme of after-school support sessions throughout the year which will be led by the NQT Induction Tutor. The programme is designed to inform practice, develop skills and identify needs for further support and training in-line with the Teachers’ Standards.
